YES! I’m looking at YOU!

Tonight we were out celebrating a family birthday. We were chatting away while eating.

My family members are big water drinkers. One by one we realized our water glasses were empty and we needed refills. We took turns looking for the waiter and trying to ‘catch his eye’.  It wasn’t happening. He wasn’t looking at us. You can’t make eye contact with someone who doesn’t realize that people are thinking about them and trying to connect with them.

We began to discuss what makes a good waiter. We decided that the waiter needed to be making better use of his eyes. He needed to be keeping an eye on us to see where we were in the meal. He needed to be aware that we might be trying to make eye contact to gain his attention. He needed to be watching and reading our body language to know if we were ready for the next course or if he should bring the check.

The evening just reiterated the importance of eye gaze and how it impacts on all of our interactions.
